Who can Obtain BIS CRS Registration and What are the Products Covered Under BIS CRS?


BIS Registration

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India. It launched the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) under the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations. The scheme was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology for IT and electronic products. Under the BIS CRS scheme, it is mandatory for manufacturers to avail of BIS certification for the electronic products they manufacture before releasing them into the market. Let’s dive deeper into the BIS and CRS scheme and the products upon which it is applicable.


What is BIS CRS Scheme?


BIS CRS scheme is launched for electronic and IT products whereby any individual who is a manufacturer of electronic goods must apply for BIS registration. The registration will be granted after their products get tested by a BIS-recognised laboratory. The BIS grants registration under the BIS CRS scheme. Once the manufacturers get registered, they are permitted to use the Standard Mark as allotted to them.


Products on Which BIS CRS is Applicable?


Initially, when the scheme was launched in 2012, it covered 15 categories of electronic products. Thereafter, 15 more categories of electronic products were added in 2014. More and more categories were bought under the coverage and now, there are 78+ products covered under the BIS registration. Documents Required for BIS CRS Registration


For making an application for BIS certification, the following documents shall be required:


  1. Business license or registration certificate for the manufacturing unit

  2. ISO certificate

  3. Authorization letter, if there is a different authorized signatory

  4. Application form

  5. A nomination letter of the Authorised India Representative

  6. Testing documents

  7. Trademark certificate

  8. Test report

  9. Product manual of the devices applied for

  10. Any other document as may be required


Once you obtain BIS CRS certification, it shall be valid for a period of 2 years after which it can be renewed if there is no change in the product.


Procedure for Obtaining BIS CRS Certification


If you are willing to obtain BIS CRS certification, then you need to follow the below-mentioned procedure:


  1. Firstly, determine whether your product is covered under the registration requirements. Check your product and its ISO number in the above-mentioned list.

  2. Provide a product sample to a BIS-authorised laboratory.

  3. Submit the application for BIS CRS certification along with the necessary documents and test report.

  4. The BIS authorities will scrutinize the application and the documents submitted.

  5. If the application conforms to all the required guidelines, then the BIS CRS certificate will be issued.
